Signs of Engine Trouble

Is it engine trouble or something else? While we’ll need to check out your vehicle to make a correct identification, we’re glad to share some of the more common signs of engine trouble. One of the first symptoms you might notice is a marked decrease in fuel economy. Your engine produces power through internal combustion, a series of small controlled explosions where an appropriate fuel-air mixture is ignited. If the engine isn’t working properly, it may not burn all the fuel, causing the waste that costs you at the pump. Another clue may be a knocking sound. Ultimately, this means that the moving parts aren’t properly lubricated. Perhaps your engine simply needs more oil, or perhaps you will need a repair. This same lack of oil distribution may cause the engine to shake. If so, you’ll probably feel a vibration. While an aging car tends to lose a bit of its “get up and go” over the years, a sudden power loss usually points to engine trouble. Finally, be aware of smoke coming from your auto’s exhaust. White smoke points toward a coolant leak and potential overheating, while blue smoke is the tell-tale sign of an oil leak and lubricant loss. If the smoke is black, it predicts an improper ratio of gasoline to air and inefficient fuel consumption.
